NASA's Perseverance rover passed Opportunity's off-world driving record on October 11, 2026, when its odometer reached 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometers), against Opportunity's 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometers). Perseverance did it in about five and a half years; Opportunity took almost 15. NASA credits the difference mainly to autonomous driving, which Perseverance used for more than 90% of its distance. Figures below are NASA's as of October 12-13, 2026, and Perseverance's total grows with every drive.
How far each NASA rover has driven#
| Rover | Landed | Distance driven (NASA) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sojourner | 1997 | about 330 feet (100 meters) | 83-sol mission |
| Spirit | 2004 | 4.8 miles (7.7 km) | Lost to the Martian winter in 2010 |
| Opportunity | 2004 | 28.06 miles (45.16 km) | Operated 2004-2018, 5,111 sols; held the record until October 11, 2026 |
| Curiosity | 2012 | more than 23.65 miles (38.07 km) | Still operating in Gale Crater |
| Perseverance | 2021 | 28.10 miles (45.22 km) on October 11, 2026 | New record, sol 2,006 |

Why Perseverance drives faster#
NASA's account points to three things:
- Autonomy. Perseverance's AutoNav images the terrain while rolling, builds a 3D hazard map and plots its own route between waypoints chosen on Earth. NASA says more than 90% of Perseverance's distance used AutoNav, against about 5% for the first Mars AutoNav on Opportunity and Spirit.
- Perception. NASA says Sojourner assessed the path using 20 measurement points, and Perseverance processes 600,000 with each look.
- Pace. Perseverance can drive as much as 1,351 feet (412 meters) in a single sol. The record-breaking drive on October 11 was 299.6 feet (91.31 meters).
NASA also notes the original mission called for no more than 12.4 miles of driving, and that the first mission extension, which began in October 2026, runs through roughly the end of 2028.
What Perseverance is doing now#
When it passed the record, Perseverance was heading toward an area called Idubi, through a region off the western rim of Jezero Crater nicknamed "Lac de Charmes." NASA says the terrain there may be some of the oldest explored in the solar system, and the science team hopes to find traces of ancient hydrothermal systems.
Where the rovers landed#
The Moon and Mars surface atlas (Space Enthusiast plan) maps every rover and lander on Mars, including Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, Perseverance and China's Zhurong. The deep-space mission tracker follows the other NASA and ESA missions, and the launch calendar lists upcoming launches. FAQ#
Which rover has driven the farthest on Mars?#
Perseverance. NASA says its odometer reached 28.10 miles (45.22 km) on October 11, 2026, passing Opportunity's 28.06 miles (45.16 km).
How far has Curiosity driven?#
NASA says more than 23.65 miles (38.07 km) as of its October 12, 2026 article. Curiosity landed in Gale Crater in 2012 and is still operating.
How fast does Perseverance drive?#
NASA says it can cover as much as 1,351 feet (412 meters) in one sol, near its top speed, because it plans much of its own route. The drive that set the record covered 299.6 feet (91.31 meters).
Is this a space investing topic?#
Only indirectly. It is a mission-status update from NASA, not a recommendation about any security. Mission extensions and lunar surface awards are tracked as events in Martian Alpha's free catalyst feed.
